Wikipedia is great in its day-to-day functions, but its greatest value, for me, is that it provides a starting point for discovery. Because it’s the first thing we all consult when we don’t know something, it takes us to the first place people are likely to look for the answer.
There are plenty of other sites out there where you can read about baseball, but if you want to learn about it from the original source, that’s a page on Wikipedia.
And every page on Wikipedia is, itself, a starting point for other research. I mean, there’s a lot of baseball in Wikipedia, but if you want to learn more about the baseball Hall of Fame, you can start with that page, and find out who was inducted for the first time, and how it happened.
Since its earliest days, the main goal of Wikipedia’s primary contributor is to connect interested parties together, bringing everyone to the same place. The fact that every interested party is an individual, living human being, makes the act of connecting to them all inherently human, as opposed to automated or robotic.
There is also an extreme symmetry between the great abundance of Wikipedia’s open information resource and the vast scarcity of its corporate enterprises. Because Wikipedia has no gatekeepers, the organization as a whole has no power. That means there are no corporate persons in charge of how it is used, and no organizations collecting the information that you see there. The fact that, in large part, it’s a human-curated repository of world information means that it’s only as good as its creators, and no better or worse than any other source.
It’s easy to see Wikipedia as something separate from the rest of the world, an abode where those who are dedicated to the truth can congregate without the distraction of fake news and propaganda. You can also see it as a starting point for fact-finding, or as a useful and informative tool.
But those are just two of its functions, and they are based on the very assumption that all you need to know about the world exists in Wikipedia’s archive.
Today, Wikipedia won’t even start in your browser. It requires that you install it, to use, and that’s a reasonable expectation for a general information source.
This, of course, means that Wikipedia can be a tricky.
